About the Department

The department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1984. It is equipped with state-of-the-art workshops, laboratories and computing facilities. The department has highly qualified and experienced faculty members. Accredited by NBA in 2019 the Department has been recognized as a research centre by Anna University from April 2003. The faculty members actively engage in research and constantly publish papers in International and National Journals. Guest lectures and industrial visits are periodically arranged for the students to enhance their curriculum. It strives for all round excellence in students, encouraging them in all extra-curricular activities.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering being one of the versatile departments of the Institute with well-equipped laboratories provides hands on training to all the students at under graduate, post graduate and PhD levels. The Department lays emphasis primarily on preparing the students to accomplish focused expertise in areas of their choice. It helps in transforming our students with a perfect balance of intellectual and real-world experiences that help them in serving the demands from our society. Academic course works and projects are designed to endow students with the ability to apply the knowledge of Science, Mathematics and Engineering and the capability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams exhibiting leadership and technical skills.


To emerge as a centre, that imparts quality higher education through the programme in the field of Mechanical Engineering and to meet the changing needs of the society.


The department involves in sustained curricular and co-curricular activities with competent faculty through teaching and research that generates technically capable Mechanical Engineering professionals to serve the society with delight and gratification.

A well-equipped and developed library is functioning in the department in addition to the central library to tailor the needs of the faculty, students and research scholars. The department library has a total of 800 books in various streams like Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Thermal Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Management, Optimization, Industrial safety, Operations research and quality control. It has current issues of Mechanical Engineering related Periodicals for reference. Project reports done by final year students are stacked in the department library for student’s reference. Department library also a system with the OPAC for accessing question banks for all subjects and link for NPTEL videos for students and faculty’s reference.

In addition to the Central Library, a well-equipped departmental library is functioning in the department catering to the needs of the faculty and students with a seating capacity of 20. The stock details are as follows:

Events Held in Department


A one day workshop was organized by the department to enhance the computer applications for Technical supporting staff on 26.11.2019. Mr. Thirumalaimuthukumaran, AP (II)/ME and Dr. V. R. Muruganantham coordinated the event.

A One day Training on Personality development and Presentation skills was arranged in the department in association with Coimbatore Productivity Council on 23.11.2019. Mr. M. D. Nasser Kamal, Executive Trainer, CPC, Coimbatore” trained 19 participant in Personality development and also in developing self confidence. Mr. M. A. Vinayagmoorthi, AP (II)/ME and Mr. R. S. Mohan Kumar, AP/ME coordinated the event.


An Industrial Training was arranged to our faculty members at M/s. Roots Polycraft on 23.11.2019. Mr. Mahendra Bharathi, HRD, Roots Polycraft, Coimbatore trained 17 faculty members of the department in various machines and also in the procedures followed in Store rooms, Quality Control. Mr. R. S. Mohan Kumar, AP/ME coordinated the event.

A Demonstration on Gas Chromatography was organized for Biotechnology students (UG and PG) on 21.11.2019. Demo was given by Mr. B. Jeeva, AP/ME. The demo included the following (1) Biogas composition was measured by using Gas chromatography (2) Working on gas chromatography.


Our department along with Textile Technology Department organized an AICTE sponsored 14 days FDP on ‘Application of Industrial Engineering concepts in Apparel and Textile Industry to improve productivity and quality of apparels’ between 16.11.2019 and 30.11.2019. Dr. SR. Devadasan/PSG Tech, Coimbatore was the chief guest. Around 40 Participants gained knowledge in the application of Industrial Engineering in Apparels and Textile sectors. Dr. M. Balaji, ASP/ME and Mr. R. S. Mohan Kumar, AP/ME coordinated the event on behalf of our department.

A Guest Lecture on “Awareness on Energy Management certification programme for students from International Society for Energy and sustainability Research (ISESR, UK)” was organized by the department on 31.10.2019. Ms. Krishna Rubigha, CEO, M/s. Ampere Voltage Consulting Private Limited, Coimbatore and CEO of International Society for Energy and Sustainability Research (India) delivered the lecture. Mr. B. Jeeva, AP/ME coordinated the guest lecture.

  • Department organized another Guest Lecture on “AutoDesk Fusion 360” on 19.09.2019. Mr. S. Sivakumar AP (II)/ME and Dr. A. P. Arun, AP (II)/ME coordinated the guest lecture.
  • Another awareness program on “Higher Education in Abroad” was given by Ms/. Career Zone, Coimbatore on 19.09.2019. Dr. N. Sangeetha, Sr. ASP/ME and Mr. S. Suresh, AP/ME coordinated the event.
  • A Guest Lecture on “Advanced Industrial Automation and Robotics” was organized by the department on 16.09.2019. Mr. Rudhrakumar delivered the guest lecture. Mr. V. Manivel Muralidaran, AP (II)/ME and Dr. A. P. Arun AP (II)/ME coordinated the guest lecture.
  • Mechanical Engineering Association Installation for 2019-2020 was conducted on 13.09.2019. Mr. Basavaraj, Division head, M/s. KSB Pumps limited Coimbatore” inaugurated and delivered a guest lecture.
  • The department organized an awareness program titled “Higher Education & Competitive Exams” on 05.09.2019. The awareness was given by M/s. BYJU’s Learning Centre, Coimbatore. Dr. N. Sangeetha, Sr. ASP/ME and Mr. S. Suresh, AP/ME coordinated the event.

Department arranged a Guest Lecture on “HVAC”. Mr. Vishnu Prakash from M/s. Vland best hub, Coimbatore delivered the guest lecture. Guest Lecture was coordinated by Dr. S. Thirumurugaveerakumar, AP (III)/ME and Mr. P. Prashanth, AP/ME.


A seminar was arranged on “Technical Seminar on NDT Course by the department on 25.07.2019. Seminar was given by Mr. B. Lawrence from M/s. A Plus NDT Group, Coimbatore. Seminar was coordinated by Mr. S. Rajesh, AP/ME.

An introduction seminar to German Japanese language has been arranged by the department on 24.07.2019. Mrs. Kavitha Sasidaran, German Language Instructor conducted the seminar. Mr. K. Manikandaprasath, AP/ME coordinated the seminar.


Department organized a Hands on Training in Modeling to B. E. Aeronautical Engineering students using SolidWorks 2018 between 24.06.2019 and 26.06.2019. Mr. M. Thirumalaimuthukumaran, AP (II)/ME, coordinated the training.

Department organized a Hands on Training in Modelling to Technical supporting staff using Solid Works 2018 on 13.05.2019 and 14.05.2019.

Another guest lecture on “GATE Awareness Programme – I” was organized by the department on 05.03.2019.

One more guest lecture on “Government Exams Awareness” was organized in association with M/s. Career Zone, Coimbatore by the department on 08.03.2019. Mr. S. Suresh, AP/ME, Mr. K. Manikanda Prasath, AP/ME, and Dr. N. Sangeetha Sr. ASP/ME coordinated the event.


Department organized a Hands-on Workshop on “VISUAL CFD” on 09.03.2019. Mr. Venkateshwaran C P, Founder and CEO, Parkati Technologies, Bangalore handled the workshop.

Short term Course on “Advanced Machining Solutions” was conducted by the department along with KCIRI and SECO, on 03.2019 and 16.03.2019.

Under KCT-CPC Student forum, department organized a Training programme on “Supply Chain Management”, on 16.03.2019.

He also delivered a guest lecture to our students on “Special Projects – Automotive Industry”. Dr. A. P. Arun, AP (II)/ME, and Dr. S. Thirumurugaveerakumar, AP (III)/ME coordinated the event.

Mechanical Engineering Association organised a “Skill Development Course” for 1st year mechanical students from 21st January to 25th January 2019. Four different courses were handled by student experts. About 47 students got benefited by this program under four different courses.

Research activities

Department of Mechanical Engineering has been recognized as a center for pursuing research programme leading to PhD degree by Anna University from 2003.

Totally around Rs. 48.65 Lakhs external funded activities was carried out by the departments under various project schemes under various bodies, viz. AICTE, Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, Institution of Engineers – India, Government of India – Ministry of Science and Technology,University Grants Commissions, South Eastern Region, etc.

Apart from externally funded activities, the department carried out a number of projects for around Rs. 7.19 Lakhs, wholly funded by the Management of KCT.

Further few industry linked projects were successfully completed by the department. Some of them are listed below.

  4. Efficiency improvement of blowers used in ring frame installed at textile mills, Sponsored by M/s. Lakshmi Electrical Drives Ltd, Coimbatore.

Following are some of the recent notable awards achieved by our students.

  • BAJA team secured 7th position in National level and achieved “Best Safety vehicle” position in BAJA 2015.
  • QUADTORC team Secured 3rd position in off road design challenge QUADTORC-2015 in national level and 1st position in South India level.
  • QBDC is a National Level event conducted by FMAE (FRATERNITY OF MECHANICAL AND AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS). Legion team of our KCT secured the 1st place in the “KILL THE HILL” followed by Acceleration and Traction test and 2nd prize in Suspension test and also awarded for Best Aesthetics.
  • Quad bike team of KCT won National championship in Quad bike competition 2017. The team also won the endurance test, fuel economy test. They also secured second place in acceleration test, kill the hill test and traction test. The event was held at Chandpur near Meerut UP. Cash Award of Rs. 1.6 Lakhs. Quadtorc is an event organised by ISNEE (Indian Society Of New Era Engineers)
