About the Department

‘Trend’, ‘Vogue’, ‘Fashion’, by whatever word you call it, is one word which has people behind it and has a telling effect on the word ‘era’ as far as clothing and grooming is concerned. Understandably, the Department of Fashion Technology was constituted in the year 2002 and is the first in the country to offer B.Tech. Fashion Technology programme, M.Tech. Apparel Technology and Ph.D. programme under Anna University Chennai. The objective of the department is to equip the students with core competencies and skills in Clothing Technology and Fashion and hone them as competent professionals for the Apparel and Fashion Industry.

The Department of Fashion Technology is offering the 4-year undergraduate program on B Tech Fashion Technology in the year 2002 and 2 year Post Graduate program on M Tech Apparel Technology in the year 2005.The Department has well established laboratories with advanced equipments and machineries for apparel manufacturing, Testing and Chemical processing. Most of the faculty have PhD with relevant industrial experience that makes better teaching and learning for students. The curriculum and syllabi that is continuously updated to meet the requirements of the academia and industry involving experts from National level institutions and Industry. The Department is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) under Tier 1 category. The Department is a recognized research centre Under Anna University, Chennai and many research scholars have got/pursuing Doctoral degree. The Department has got sponsored Center of Excellence/research projects from various Government agencies like TIFAC/MHRD/SPARC, DST SEED, DST IDP, UGC, TNSCST, Ministry of Textiles etc to carry out research in Textile and Apparel Technologies. The faculty and students also participate in National and International level competitions and won awards from AICTE and NRDC. The Department is well supported by Placement Cell of KCT to ensure all needy students are well placed in leading apparel industries. Our students also take up Higher studies in leading Universities in France, UK, USA and in National Institute of Fashion Technology, (NIFT) National Institute of Design, (NID) India. MoU with leading textile/apparel industries and International Universities help the students and Faculty with necessary skill and competencies required to meet future challenges. Fashion Technology Association is actively managed by students and guided by a faculty coordinator. The association organizes events and guest lectures that ensures better skill and communication. The Department is also having Alumni cell that constantly interacts with Alumni and ensures a better relationship with department and institution.

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of B.Tech (Fashion Technology) will be able to

Program Outcomes

Engineering Graduates will be able to:

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

Centre of Exellence – Lectra Apparel CAD Centre

This centre, promoted in collaboration with M/s. Lectra, France, with a total outlay of about Rs. 9 crores, is equipped with 40 terminals and a digitizer. Lectra software for textile design, apparel pattern drafting and fabric spread planning, speed steps are useful for students’ training and industry consultancy.

KCT – TIFAC CORE

TIFAC Centre of Relevance and Excellence, is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for a total outlay of about Rs. 4 crore. This centre houses manufacturing and advanced testing facilities and undertakes research and consultancy projects in liaison with the textile and apparel industry.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT:

Our department have done many research and development activities for Minor projects, Interdisciplinary Projects, Students research projects, International projects. During 2016-17 to 2018-2019, total funds are sanctioned and granted more than Rs.68 lakhs by research agencies such as UGC, DST, TNSCST, SPARC.

CONSULTANCY:

Carried out number of consultancy work for the Industry and students projects and generated funds more than ten lakhs during 2016-2017 to 2018–19.
