About the Department
‘Trend’, ‘Vogue’, ‘Fashion’, by whatever word you call it, is one word which has people behind it and has a telling effect on the word ‘era’ as far as clothing and grooming is concerned. Understandably, the Department of Fashion Technology was constituted in the year 2002 and is the first in the country to offer B.Tech. Textile Technology (Fashion Technology) programme, M.Tech. Apparel Technology & Management and Ph.D. programme under Anna University of Technology Coimbatore. The objective of the department is to equip the students with core competencies and skills in Clothing Technology and Fashion and hone them as competent professionals for the Apparel and Fashion Industry. The Department has strong links with the apparel industries located in Tirupur, Coimbatore, Chennai and Bangalore as well as other parts of India. The synergy between industry and institute helps in keeping up with the latest trends in technology, transforming the innovation in products and processes developed by the department into viable commercial products.
The department is accredited by AICTE, NBA under Tier I format for FIVE years from 2014.

Program Educational Objectives

PO-1 – Acquire knowledge on the principles of mathematics, science and basic engineering, and apply the same in apparel engineering processes.
PO-2 – Analyze and identify required parameters vital to design and manufacture apparel products suiting the needs of the market
PO-3 – Acquire creative and innovative skills to design apparels and contribute to the design of systems,components of processes with due considerations given to public health, safety, cultural, societal and environmental factors.
PO-4 – Acquire skills to conduct experiments/investigations and interpret data with reference to systems and standards to provide valid inference in apparel engineering.
PO-5 – Gain skill to use modern design and engineering tools towards optimum utilization of resources in apparel product and process development.
PO-6 – Obtain knowledge of societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues related to fashion and textile technology and understand the accountability and responsibility while undertaking engineering technology practice in the current situations
PO-7 – Understand the impact of sustainable development in apparel manufacturing processes.
PO-8 – Understand the commitment towards professional ethics and responsibilities in the entire apparel business processes
PO-9 – Acquire capability to contribute significantly as an individual and as a team player all through the apparel supply chain.
PO-10 – Acquire skill to effectively communicate in written, oral and illustrative formats to put forth solutions, reports and effectively present them in precise and clear manner in the apparel supply chain from concept to consumer.
PO-11 – Apply the knowledge, skill and attitude as a team player in initiating, executing and managing projects in the areas of design, manufacture, marketing and entrepreneurship in multi-disciplinary environments.

India’s fashion, textiles and clothing industry play an important role in the world economy and in international trade. It is also one of the largest contributing sectors of India’s exports worldwide. The textiles and garments value chain has become highly globalized and buyer-driven with customer demands shaping the industry. The report of the Working Group constituted by the Planning Commission on boosting India’s manufacturing exports during 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), envisages India’s exports of Textiles and Clothing at USD 64.41 billion by the end of March, 2017. The textiles industry accounts for 14% of industrial production, which is 4% of GDP; employs 45 million people and accounts for nearly 11% share of the country’s total exports basket. During the year 2012-13, Readymade Garments account for almost 39% of the total textiles exports. Apparel and cotton textiles products together contribute nearly 74% of the total textiles exports.
Key factors for dynamic growth in the apparel and textile market contain economic revival post-recession, rising demand for nonwoven disposable, apparel and textile products, increasing demand from promising regions, especially Asia-Pacific, and going up demand for environmentally-friendly fibers.To succeed in the big domestic as well as export markets in the competitive environment, Indian textile and garment industry will have to Set-up large sized production units and achieve the economies of scale, Adopt latest technologies to improve quality, consistency and reduce cost, Increase productivity and enhance cost effectiveness, Cut lead times and meet tight delivery schedules, Focus on value addition and product differentiation, Invest in product development and product innovation, Create flexible manufacturing capabilities and Invest in training of human resources and upgradation of worker skills.

In this new era, innovation will be a key driver of growth. Creating and adopting new technologies will allow companies to generate faster and more sustained growth. In view of fiercely competitive textile and apparel market, Indian industry must improve the technical competence, R & D capability and knowledge base. In these areas, Department of Fashion Technology at Kumaraguru College of Technology plays a significant role. Department places major importance on development of analytical and reasoning abilities as well creative abilities of students. New courses were started on Portfolio; Product Development will lead to innovative new products and train the students in processes of product development.
During the past 10 years of existence, Department of Fashion Technology has acquired a status of excellence in Fashion, Apparel and textile education. Alumni of the Department have made name in their profession, both in India and abroad. Our students hold senior positions in industry and research. Many of them have turned into first generation entrepreneurs and are running very successful enterprises. Industry expects Fashion Technology Department and its alumni to play a major role in the growth of the apparel and textile sectors for expanding their activities into challenging new areas.
